Non-Credit Classes to be Offered at SouthArk in April


El Dorado, AR (March 11, 2008) – South Arkansas Community Colllege’s Office of Corporate and Community Education will offer classes in April.    NEW: Basic Spanish for Travelers, Tuesdays, April 1-May 6, from 6-8 p.m. This is a functional language class for individuals who plan to travel to Spanish-speaking countries for leisure. It focuses on those language items most commonly required by tourists to comfortably function abroad. Upon completion of the program, participants will be able to use Spanish to do some or all of the following: greet people; engage in etiquette and social niceties; introduce oneself and others; count to 2000; compliment people, food, and drink; order food and drink; give directions to a cab driver; register in a hotel; make simple purchases; request emergency assistance; and make and receive telephone calls. No prior knowledge of Spanish necessary.  Cost is $89 per person, which includes text.  Registration Deadline: 3/24/08. 

NEW: Spring Line Dance Series & Exercise Group will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, April 1 – May 1. Learn the basic line dances and then join the exercise group.  One must attend all line dances to join the exercise group. In the lessons you will learn a new line dance and review others as time permits. The line dance exercise group meets at 6:00 p.m. after lessons. Line Dance Lessons are held at 5:30 p.m. in the following series:

 Spring Series: April 1: Crusin’; April 3: Ghost Train; April 8: Crossover; April 10: Rita’s Waltz; April 15: Got to be Funky; April 17: Carolyn’s Waltz; April 22: Ridin’; April 29: Swamp Thing; May 1:  Graduation & Social with Exercise Group.  Each lesson is $5 per person paid in advance. The exercise group is $10 per person per month. NEW: Microsoft Office Access 2007: Level 1, Wednesdays, April 2-23, from 6-8 p.m. Most organizations maintain and manage large amounts of information. One of the most efficient and powerful ways of managing data is by using relational databases. Information can be stored, linked, and managed using a single relational database application and its associated tools. In this course, you will examine the basic database concepts, and create and modify databases and their various objects using the Microsoft® Office Access™ 2007 relational database application.  You will create and modify new databases and their various objects. This course is designed for students who wish to learn the basic operations of the Microsoft Access database application to perform their day-to-day responsibilities, and to understand the advantages that using a relational database application can bring to their business processes. The Level 1 course is for the individual whose job responsibilities include designing and creating new databases, tables, and relationships; creating and maintaining records; locating records; and producing reports based on the information in the database. Class is limited to 10 students. Cost is $109, which includes text. Registration Deadline: 3/25/08. NEW: Self Improvement, Wednesdays, April 2 – May 7, from 6-8 p.m.  This course will concentrate on personal activities you can do to have a better understanding of how you are and how to get along differently with others. Topics to be covered are: Self Awareness, Self Worth, Self Expression, Communication Styles, Assertiveness and Stress Reduction. A variety of information will be provided and group activities will be conducted. Students will need to bring something to write with and take notes on. Cost is $59 per person. Registration Deadline: 3/25/08. Beginning QuickBooks 2003 Pro I, Thursdays, April 3-24, from 6-8 p.m. Are your bookkeeping skills out of touch?  Got the QuickBooks program but aren’t sure how to use it or even where to start?  This course will guide you through installing the QuickBooks software; setting up a company; working with lists, inventories, invoices, accounts receivables, bank accounts and accounts payables. Class is limited to 10 students. Cost is $109, which includes text. Registration Deadline: 3/31/08. NEW: From the Freezer to the Table, Thursdays, April 3 – 24, from 6-8 p.m. Come explore the world of the frozen dinner. Dinner doesn't have to be a chore, with easy do ahead ideas you can serve your family a hot meal using dishes you have prepared and frozen. Everything from main dishes down to desserts, receive ideas and recipes that can make your life easier. The class will be held at Faith Community Church, 810 Camp Street, El Dorado. Class is limited to 15 students. There will be an additional supply fee of $20 payable to the instructor. Cost is $49 per person. Registration Deadline: 3/31/08. Scrapbooking, Thursdays, April 3-24, from 6-8 p.m. Do something extra special with all those boxes of photos!  This beginner level course will teach you the basics of cropping and matting photos, journaling, and how to put it all together creatively!  Bring your mother, daughter, sister, or friend and create a scrapbook together. Cost is $39 per person. Registration Deadline: 3/31/08. Beginner Country Waltz, Thursdays, April 3-17 and on Monday, April 21st, from 7-9 p.m. The Waltz might be the most popular dance of all time. The country waltz is a bit different from the ballroom waltz as it is done straight rather than taking a side step. The Waltz music has a distinctive one-two-three tempo (three beats to a measure of music). Although this dance looks very smooth, graceful, and romantic when watched, it provides a vigorous workout for the dancers. If you like songs like “Waltz Across Texas” and “Can I Have This Dance”, you need to sign up for this class taught by an excellent instructor. Cost is $39 per person. Registration Deadline: 3/31/08. Customer Service: Bridging Businesses with Buyer, Monday, April 7, from 9 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. In today’s highly competitive marketplace, businesses are challenged everyday to attract new customers while preserving their existing client relationship. Registration Deadline: 4/2/08. Scams that Target Senior Citizens, Monday, April 7, from 1-2:30 p.m. This program identifies the common scams that target senior citizens, provides information on the tactics that scammers use and tips on how to protect yourself and your loved ones from unscrupulous people whose only goal is to help themselves. This seminar is FREE and is open to the public. Please RSVP by 4/2/08. Hunter Education, Tuesdays & Thursdays, April 8-17, from 6-9 p.m. By Arkansas law, anyone born after Jan. 1, 1969 will be required to take Hunter Education and carry a certification card.  The certification is mandatory in most western and mid-western states.  Young hunters and adults who will be hunting out-of-state are urged to attend the class.  You must attend all four classes.  There is no fee for this course.  Advance registration required.  Registration Deadline: 4/3/08. Basic Drawing I, Mondays, April 15 – May 5, from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. If you enjoy doodling or wish that you could learn the basics of drawing, then this is the place for you to start. This 12-hour class will teach the most basic drawing skills and prepare you to take Basic Drawing II. This class will cover basic shapes and 2-D drawing. Students will receive a call by April 9th, if the class makes and at that time should purchase & bring the following supplies to class: 8 ½ x 11 typing paper, drawing pencils or No. 2 pencils, and pink pearl eraser. Class is limited to 12. Cost is $59 per person. Registration Deadline: 4/9/08. 

Dog Obedience, Tuesdays, April 15-May 6, from 6-8 p.m. Learn the 5 basics of obedience (sit, stay, down, come, and heel), while focusing on positive reinforcement.  Several techniques for how to pleasantly manage life with your dog will be taught. Dog handlers must be at least 12 years of age. Dogs must be at least 4 months old and have current shot records.  This should include rabies, distemper/parvo, and kennel cough.  The vaccinations must be recent enough that they will not expire during the session. 

Cost is $39 per dog. Registration Deadline: 4/10/08. Dance classes will be held at SouthArk Community College’s gym and all other classes will be held at the Center for Workforce Development, 3698 E Main Rd, El Dorado.
